archaeoastronomy

The study of the practice of astronomy in civilizations and societies of prehistory. In particular, archaeoastronomy is concerned with archaeological evidence for astronomical knowledge rather than written records. Sites that are studied include the stone-age remains in western Europe, ancient meso-America and the classical Mediterranean civilizations.
